Picnic Food Review - Focus on the Family

I am working on a special project for Southern Utah Food Reviews... Normally I do restaurants... My thought is since Easter is on April 24th, 2011 to do a food review of the best kind... It will be Family Time in the Park...

April 9th, 1pm-3pm

Fire House Park
1800 N Dixie Downs Rd Dixie Downs -Not Far from Snow Canyon Parkway on Dixie Downs- St. George

There is no cost other than what you purchase and choose to do with your family/friends...

The idea is to show everyone that it's great to go out to eat, but even better to spend quality time with your family and friends... If you are just a couple, that is great too...

The ending time is approximate, depending on what your family will be doing...

What to Bring:

Your Family, Friends or Neighbors
Picnic Food/Drinks for your Family and group... Other groups will not be eating each others food... So bring what you normally would...
Games... If you play games at the park or bring your pet, they do have a pet area that is alot of fun... So bring what you normally would to a picnic... They do have areas where you can grill at as well... If this is your thing, I believe you can do that there...  Our family has even gone to McDonald's or where ever and brought the food to the park...

You may want to bring a blanket to sit on just in case there are no tables available...

P.S. There is a dog park...If you normally bring your pets with you, then you can bring them...

I will be taking pictures and if we find that the weather is bad, we will be rescheduling it... In April it is hard to know what is what... If you would like to help with this project, then please RSVP to this special invitation to Focus on the Family...

Not sure if there is going to be any music... If someone volunteers to sing or bring a group, then that would be awesome...

Monday

Bishops- Now Open in Washington Utah

Bishops Restaurant
961 N 3050 e #B-6 St George, UT 84790

If anyone in Southern Utah has ever been to Bishops that was located in Washington by the Red Cliffs In on Green Springs and Telegraph, you will be happy to know they are now re-opened... They use to be where the Dorthea's is at now, the have moved and our family is very happy about that for our Monday morning breakfasts...

We walked in there today because we were confused if it was the same Bishops or a different one, plus they had a sign up that said "Coming Soon" and then another that said "Now Open"... We went in and found out that today was the first day they were opened and yes, they are the same owners of the other Bishops...

We had a really good breakfast today and had great service... They have always been reasonably priced.. I will actually be doing a full review of them when they have been open for a few weeks or so... That way they can get everyone trained and all the equipment and such that is needed... It was nice having our breakfast place back in town... They offer breakfast, lunch and dinner...

They are now located in the shopping center that is behind the Albertsons Plaza, and on the same side... Previously in the same location was Rise and Dine and Sils... I'm not sure of the name of the plaza...

Welcome Back Bishops

Wednesday

Red Dog Cafe- Dammeron Valley, Utah

With Great Sadness the Red Dog Cafe closed it's doors on September 24th, 2011... We will miss them in our community... Good luck Danny and Andrea and the gang.

I have to say that this is my most favorite place to eat at. When you walk into the Red Dog you feel like you came home. I love the atmosphere and the food is home-style cooking. I went to their Facebook page and pulled this information up from their description:

Where home-style cookin' meets authentic slow-smoked BBQ for the best food from sun-up to sundown in Southern Utah! (just 15 minutes from St. George, up Snow Canyon.)

1090 N Highway 18
Dammeron Valley, UT 84783
(435) 574-3600

My  husband and I decided to go out for breakfast at the Red Dog today. We eat breakfast at funny times and it is great that you can have it anytime at the Red Dog Cafe. If my grandson JJ knew we went here, he would not be impressed, he loves this place too...

Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs
Today we both ordered the Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs. I would have to say that they have the best Chicken Fried Steak around. I have been to many places where it taste like it came out of a bag that was shipped from a place that uses cardboard as the main ingredient. That is not the case at the Red Dog.  The Chicken Fried Steak was thick, not dry and topped with country gravy.  Although I must warn you that this is a dish that can satisfy even the hungriest person and they are very generous in serving this breakfast. With this choice it comes with hash-browns, toast and eggs. I also ordered Rye Toast, my eggs were medium well and hash-browns. My eggs were perfect! I am so picky about my eggs and I have issues if they are served all slimy. I won't go into what I think about slimy eggs, but lets just say NASTY! Everything was hot, fresh and delicious.

Debra
I think I caught our waitress by surprise when I told her I was going to do a food review of the Red Dog today. Normally I don't mention names in my reviews, but I got her permission and her picture. Our waitresses name was Debra and she is a hoot.  Even the first time she served us, it was like we have known her forever. She has a great personality and is fast and getting items to where they need to be... If you happen to go in there and see Debra,  make sure you say hey, I betcha she will say hey back :)

Pies... Oh my goodness, there is no way to forget the pies at the Red Dog Cafe. Although I had breakfast I had to finish it off with a piece of freshly made Coconut Cream Pie... Heaven is the only way to describe the pies there... When I get to Heaven, I know there has to be pies from the Red Dog there and there will be Coconut Cream, Black Forest Cheese Cake, Chocolate and Banana Cream and that is to only name a few of the many selections they offer there... I wasn't able to finish my pie, but what I ate was out of this world good...

There is only one negative about the Red Dog and that is my own personal thing... If you all have read my reviews, I am a Pepsi person and they serve Coke products. But they do have Ice Tea, Coffee, Water and I am sure there are other things there...

Over all Experience:

Service: Wonderful
Price: Very Affordable and they have coupons in the Dixie Direct as well as daily specials. I used my Dixie Direct today and got one of our meals free. They do sell them there if you are looking for one... Way worth the price and pays for itself the first couple times you use it.
Cleanliness: Very Clean
Atmosphere: You will find this is a family friendly place that is run mostly by family members. When you come in you can hear the wood crackling in the fireplace, wood floors and cute pictures of the owners bull dog...

Additional Note: If you don't see something on the menu, do not be afraid to ask. Many times I have had to have something special and they have gone out of their way to accommodate my special diet.  Everything is made fresh there and although I did have breakfast one of my favorite menu items are the ribs... You have got to try these melt in your mouth ribs. You will not be disappointed.

Dammeron Valley is about 15 miles out of St. George as you are heading towards Pine Valley, but it is well worth the trip... Please note that they are closed on Sunday and Mondays...

I came across this video on youtube when looking for their address... What a find that was, lol... Now it makes me even more hungry and I just got back from there... I wonder if they would consider a delivery of yummy ribs, lol JK Red Dog...

Saturday

Chuck- A- Rama's/ St. George, Utah

Chuck -A-Rama
127 North red Cliff drive
(435)673-4464

My daughter, JJ and myself went to Chuck -A-Rama's today. I can't say it was the best I have ever had. I would use the word "feeding troff" when describing today's fiasco. I may have felt that way today because it was wall to wall people and it was like they were afraid the food was going to be gone at that exact moment in time...

Chuck-A-Rama's is a buffet style place and for the most part the food is very good. Many of the items are what one would consider "home cooking" types of recipes rather than fine dining offerings. I would say the best items they have in my opinion is the lemon dessert on the salad bar area and the fried chicken.  My daughter Jessica likes it there because they serve butternut squash, which is difficult to find around here. They do offer fresh rolls and yummy desserts. I try to stay away from these however for the most part. Out of all the things I chose for today's meal, I think only one item was not good whatsoever and that was the lasagna. There was something not right with it. There was this weird feeling to it, kinda like the crunch you have when you chipped a tooth and it was gritty. That is NOT something I would want to ever have again. In addition to that, it wasn't hot and the cheese was not melted. It was actually quite nasty all in all.

Now the drink options are great. Whatever your poison is, you will find it there. You can find Pepsi, Coke, Juices, Milk, Teas, Coffee, Hot Cocoa and Water as your choices... There are so many choices that I don't even recall them all to list here. From looking on their website, they offer over 40 choices... Kudos to them for that :)

As for customer service, it was horrible. By the time we left, we had all of our plates on the table. I was thinking the waiter never came to the table because  they had a huge crowd. Then I looked over and it was someone else's section. He did come over and give one refill and that was it, nothing more, nothing less. If we would have had a good waiter, I think today's experience may have been different and it is a place I would go to again, but not to this waiters section.

One nice thing about Chuck-A-Rama's is that they have a really cute country style decor going on. It is a step above most of the buffets I have been into. You will notice that it adds to the warmth of the place.

Overall Experience:

Service: Not great! At least today's service wasn't. However I have been here before and the service was much better.
Price: On the Average it is around 10.00 which includes beverages and kids 3 and under eat free... Major plus if you have a family or picky eaters.
Cleanliness: One of the best buffets when it comes to being clean and nicely decorated.
Hours: They are open Monday -Saturday 11-4 for lunch and Monday -Saturday 4-9pm for Dinner and on Sundays they are open from 11am-8pm.

Additional Notes: For the most part you will find just about anything you are wanting at Chuck-A-Rama's... If you don't care about getting all of your drinks and such, it is a good deal for what you pay and the food is good. You can check out their website for actual menu items and more information.
